The league was founded in New York City on June 6, 1946, as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). It changed its name to the National Basketball Association on August 3, 1949, after merging with the competing National Basketball League (NBL).
NBA players receive five points for a first team vote, three points for a second team vote, and one point for a third team vote. Starting in 2024 24, the five highest point totals regardless of position make up the first team, with the second and third teams following.
