Santos (Portuguese pronunciation: [sPtus], Saints) is a municipality in the Brazilian state of So Paulo, founded in 1546 by the Portuguese nobleman Brs Cubas. It is located mostly on the island of So Vicente, which harbors both the city of Santos and the city of So Vicente, and partially on the mainland.
Santos is the country's largest port and was significantly modernized in the 1990s. The city is home to the internationally known Santos football (soccer) club and its sizable stadium; the team is perhaps best known for Pel, a former player who is one of the most famous athletes in the world.
