The supernatural horror film had what author Paul Meehan described as "its genesis" in early German expressionism in the 1920s and early 1930s with films like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari and Nosferatu.
The first depictions of the supernatural on screen appeared in several of the short silent films created by the French pioneer filmmaker Georges Mlis in the late 1890s.
